About

Canterbury storefront - continuing to cater to your menswear needs during lockdown

Our Story

County Clothes was founded in 1976 by Robert Midlane and Bryan Weller. At the time, Bryan was the manager of a menswear store in Canterbury, and Robert was his regular customer. Impressed by the quality of personal service he always received from Bryan, Robert proposed that they go into business together, and they agreed to open their own store.

At the time, Robert owned a retail premises on St. Margaret’s Street in Canterbury, which became the site of the first County Clothes shop – and continues to serve customers to this day. From these beginnings, County Clothes developed a loyal following of customers by holding to the ethos of selecting quality merchandise and providing outstanding service.

Our Stores

County Clothes has since expanded beyond Canterbury, starting with the addition of the Tenterden store in 1990. The opening of this second shop also marked the arrival into the business of new manager John Lambert, who almost a quarter of a century later took the helm of County Clothes by becoming Managing Partner.

Under John’s stewardship, the County Clothes group has continued to flourish, with new stores opening in Reigate, Sevenoaks, Bexhill-on-Sea, Royal Tunbridge Wells, and Herne Bay.

Recent years have also seen the creation of a partnership with custom tailoring experts ETCH, a sponsorship deal with Kent County Cricket Club, and a nomination for Best Independent Menswear Retailer at the prestigious Drapers Awards.

All of our sales staff have expert knowledge of the clothes and accessories in our collection, and will be happy to assist you.
